Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and you know what that means…it’s time to indulgence in sweets! Cupcakes are socially acceptable to eat all year-round, but decorating them with Valentine’s-inspired decoration make them that much better. Make them for your SO, bae or loved ones, plus there’s no better gift than a homemade one made with love (pun intended). All you need are cupcakes, frosting, Valentine-inspired cookie cutters, fondant and sprinkles.
You can make cupcakes from scratch or from a box in the flavour of your choosing. I made vanilla cupcakes because they’re a classic and besides, who doesn’t love vanilla? I baked mine in heart-covered liners, which you can purchase at the dollar store, to make them that much more festive. Top your cupcakes with frosting using a piping tip or with an offset spatula. I used a Wilton 1M piping tip and made pretty fluffy roses. Again, you can make the frosting from scratch or forego that option and save time and buy a ready-made tub. You can even colour your frosting with food colouring to really make them Valentine’s-themed.
Now for the fun and creative part! I bought these adorable mini cutters in shapes of x, o and hearts at Winners for $3.99 and rolled out some pink and red fondant. You want to roll out the fondant to about and eighth of an inch thick. Once you cut out your shapes, let them dry for about 10 minutes so that they become stiff so that they’re able to hold their shape once you place them on the frosting. Prior to adding the finishing touch, you can add sprinkles or edible glitter to jazz your cupcake up.
And there you have pretty pink and red sweets to share with your sweetie. Wrap in pretty cupcake boxes or large cellophane bags with ribbon. They’re best to be enjoyed in the first two days after baking, and place them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
