I have an obsession with lipsticks, more specifically, matte lippies. If they’re long-lasting and don’t transfer, even better! I’m also very particular about the colour that I wear. In general, my makeup routine is pretty quick, easy and effortless. I hardly wear any products and when I do, I keep the hues neutral and subtle. However, the pop that I like to add to my look is colour to my lips. For everyday wear, I prefer a nude lip or one with a little bit of a pop, and for dates or special occasions, something with a little more boldness.
I saw these Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink lippies in store and they piqued my interest but I was still reluctant since I’ve tried other matte lip products from the brand to only be bummed out by the wear or the colours. I decided to completely jump in and give them the benefit of the doubt. I chose a few colours that I thought I’d like and tested them out. Keep reading to see the swatches!
Before getting into the swatches, I wanted to touch upon the applicator. It’s a narrow-tipped sponge applicator that allows you to apply the product on with precision and doesn’t excessively draw out product from the tube. I absolutely love it because you only need to apply one coat and the finish is opaque. The shades are super pigmented so a little goes a long way! I’d say I have a peaked cupid’s bow and an average to full bottom lip so having the narrow applicator makes it so easy for me to accentuate my cupid’s bow and contour my lips to create a clean look.
There are a total of 19 shades available, ranging from nudes to bold purples, but I chose colours in between that would suit different looks and occasions. From the top, Lover, Ruler, Pioneer and Voyager.
The first shade is Lover, which is the most neutral and subtle colour. I love this one and wear it every day to give my lips definition without drawing focus to them. It’s a soft pink that goes with any look.
Next is Ruler, which is my favourite shade to wear. It has an evident pop but not one that’s inappropriate for daytime wear. If you’re going from day to evening wear, Ruler is the ideal colour. It’s also the one that’s constantly out of stock! I’ve been wearing it more often than usual because the colour is just that pretty! Regardless of what I drink or eat, this colour stays put.
If you’re looking for a red carpet red lippie, Pioneer is your BFF. It’s bold, beautiful and classy. I haven’t had the chance to wear this hue yet but I’m so excited to do so! It’s vibrant and the perfect red to wear with a LBD.
The last shade and the darkest one that I got is Voyager, which is perfect for an evening out with the girls or a date night. It gives you a sophisticated and sensual look that complements a bolder makeup look.
Although these lippies are long-lasting, they’re stubborn to remove. I use Uriage’s Thermal Micellar Water Makeup Remover Wipes and they come off with just a few swipes. You really don’t need to rub, just let the cranberry extract do its thing in removing the product and the infused Thermal Water will bring hydration back to your lips.
Overall, I absolutely adore these lippies and will definitely discover new shades soon! They’re also so affordable versus other matte lippies that I’ve used in the past. They retail for $9.95 at Walmart so they’re a fraction of the price of the Smashbox Always On lippies that I get at Sephora for $28. If you’re on a budget, Maybelline’s Superstay Matte Ink lipsticks area great alternative that will get the job done.
