The end of August is nearing and just like that, summer has come and gone. With that, I thought it would be the perfect time to share my favourite items that I swear by. They’re products that I use on the daily and that have become staples to my skincare and beauty routines.
In the dead heat that we’ve experienced this summer, my t-zone gets oilier than usual, but thanks to Clean & Clear’s oil-absorbing sheets, my face is shine-free. These are a-ma-zing. Towards the end of the day, I feel my face is a terrain of oil. Before discovering these sheets, I would blot my face with a tissue and think that it was clean and oil-free. Boy, was I wrong. I really like the fact that after the sheet absorbs oil, it turns transparent, proof that it picked up oil. I always have a pack of these in my handbag and cannot live without it. There are 50 sheets in a pack that run for about $5.99 at any drugstore or big box store.
Another item that I cannot live without is a good lip balm. I have been using this one for years and no matter how many other brands I’ve tried, Nivea’s Essential Lip Balm is my Holy Grail of lip balms. My lips tend to dry out quickly so I was looking for a lip balm that would keep them hydrated and moisturized. I have tried so many different types but none like this one. It’s creamy and glides on smoothly onto my lips and keeps them hydrated for hours. It’s an unscented and unflavoured balm that I use as a base or to hydrate my lips after a coat of lipstick. I love this product so much, I have one on my nightstand table, on my vanity table, on my desk at work, and in my handbag, so I literally have one around me at all times. This product can also be found at any drugstore or big box store for about $2. Since I go through them regularly, I purchase the duo pack so that I always have a backup, that runs at less than $4, which is a steal!
This next beauty product is one that made me believe in wearing foundation again. When I first started wearing makeup years ago, my skin was youthful and I didn’t have many blemishes to cover up, so I forewent the foundation step completely. I also never found a foundation that gave me a reason to use it. All of them left my skin looking shiny and cakey until I met this one. I was at Generation Beauty back in May and I was getting a makeover done at the Smashbox booth. Once the makeover was done, I wandered around the exhibition hall to visit the other brands’ booths. Hours later, I noticed that my skin was still matte and looked flawless. I was so impressed I had to go back and get the product name and number from the makeup artist. It’s Smashbox’s Studio Skin 15-Hour Wear Foundation. It’s a liquid foundation that isn’t too runny and has really good coverage to mask any embellishments. It also doesn’t make my skin look cakey or “dooey”. My colour is 2.4 in natural beige, and you’ll be sure to find the right colour to match your skin tone among the 24 shades. I set the foundation with a press-powder. I picked mine up at Sephora for $48. It’s much pricier than a drugstore foundation, but it’s worth the investment.
The next product is one that I discovered at Gen Beauty as well. Pixi’s Glow Tonic Toner refreshes and softens your skin, removes impurities and leaves a nice fresh scent. I heard about this product a while ago but it’s a product that’s only available in the US, so if I were to order it online, I would be paying at least double. When I saw that they were selling them at Gen Beauty, I knew I had to get my hands on a bottle. This product also runs on the pricier side compared to a drugstore toner, but it’s gentle on the skin and doesn’t sting it. If you have sensitive skin, this toner is perfect for you. Since it has glycolic, it will help with acne-troubled skin. I’m someone who will only buy products that are tailored to my skin type, but this product will do wonders for anyone. The toner runs for about $30, but it was worth every penny.
Yet another product from Gen Beauty! I discovered Absolute NY at this event and I’m so happy that I did! Their Velvet Lippies are a dream to wear. They’re matte lipsticks (you know how I love all things matte) and the colour is so rich and beautiful to wear casually or for a formal evening. I won a contest a few weeks ago and the company sent me lippies in all the colours of the rainbow, which I swatched in a previous post (hop on over to it here!). They’re so creamy and moisturize my lips really well.
Following the matte trend, I finally got my hands on the Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Palette that consists of 12 beautiful neutral matte colours. What I love about this palette is that I will use every single one of the colours. I’m very much into the nudes and browns and it allows me to play around and create different looks with colours I’m comfortable with. The colours are also very pigmented so a little goes a long way. I have tried many different palettes before, including Urban Decay’s Naked line, but this matte palette is one of my favourites of all time. I picked mine up at Gen Beauty, but it’s also available at Sephora for $54.
My favourite nail colour is Essie’s Ballet Slippers. It’s an opaque blush pink that’s very minimalist and classy. When I was making a quick run at Walmart, I came across an end cap of L’Oreal’s Color Riche nail polishes and the 114 (Nude Demoiselle) color caught my eye. These claim to have a deeper, more vibrant colour with greater shine, opaque coverage in one coat and a subtle rose scent. At the price point of $6.95, I thought, why not try it out. The brush is a wide round brush, which is something I love because it covers more of the nail in a single stroke. I noticed immediately that there was a nice opacity to the colour, so you can get away with just putting on one coat. It also comes in a pretty cut glass bottle that makes it look chic. I would have liked for the colour to be a bit brighter (like SinfulColors’ Easy Going) but I’m very happy with the consistency and ease of application.
